Lauryl lived most of her life, and met her fate at the Shalebridge Cradle.
As a ward of the Shalebridge Cradle orphanage and insane asylum, the orphan Lauryl S. had many frightening experiences. She managed to avoid the wrath of Patient no. 5, J. Nuvio, by holding still while he painted her portrait.
Lauryl did not like the rules, and thought that the doctors were just as scary as the paitents.
Friendship with Drept
Despite the conditions, she made a good friend with a young boy named Drept, who was also orphaned. If she was not playing with Drept, she would sneak chalk from the classrooms to make hopscotch. She and Drept would sneak to the kitchen to grab bread, and saw M. Gunter, the cannibal. When moved to the Nursury tower, Drept told her not to cry too much, as that would make Miss Arthur mad.
Death
While playing hide-and-seek with Drept in the attic of the asylum area, above the White Ward, the Hag appeared, found Lauryl and killed her while Drept watched unseen, paralyzed with fear. Despite Drept as a witness, and lack of body, the murder was blamed on a paitent, possibly insigated by E. Poshtoll, a.k.a "King No-one".
Her body was taken by the Hag and buried in a secret room in the catacombs in Fort Ironwood with a spell marked on the tomb. Since her death, her ghost haunted the attic in the now-abandoned Cradle, unable to escape, due to the Cradle 'remembering' her. During the events of Thief: Deadly Shadows, Garrett will manage to liberate her spirit.
Drept became obsessed with finding the "Gray Lady". He joined the Hammerites and sought a reckoning for Lauryl until he was an old man. Drepts working desk in St. Edgar's Church has a small monument plaque hanging on the wall above it, as a memorial for Lauryl. It reads, "LAURYL THERE SHALT BE A RECKONING."
